Speech of Prof. Victor Billeh - Chairman of the Board of Trustees

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Madaba, I welcome you all to this important event to see a new cohort of young men and women completing successfully the requirements for their AUM degrees in various fields.

Before I begin to address our CELEBRANTS, those who brought us all together here to join their celebration, I would like to specifically thank, our Colleagues The Faculty and staff , the pioneers who had given too many attributes that helped develop the capabilities and talents of our graduating class of 2017.

Dear Graduating class of 2017

As you are all celebrating a significant moment in your lives, AUM is offering you a new moment of insight and reason. It is now that you are opening the real gates of your university towards its real heart and mind, I mean you. You are not only holding its message to your new lives and communities of social, scientific, intellectual and cultural interactions, but you are now the holders of a great responsibility towards yourselves.

This responsibility means that you keep AUM alive, by advancing your thoughts, visions and critical thinking every day, wherever you go and whatever you do. Your university promises you to do the same. Today’s celebration is a joyful announcement that you are extending AUM into new horizons of human dreams and successes.

During your last years at AUM, you seeded your talents and ambitions in soils that are rich with the love of truth, knowledge and great values of human wisdom and reason. You will keep doing so as you are moving to other soils which need your high skills and determined spirits to produce excellence and breakthroughs.

As you move on in your future careers, you will be living in a future about which you know very little. At AUM, you learned in classrooms, but when you go to the real world, you will learn from every encounter. You will always be students for the rest of your lives.

Whatever you choose to do, do it with passion and work for the Public Good, because this is where you will find the joy and the greatest achievements and rewards. Make work as part of your life, but not your life.

The life you are moving into is not only waiting for answers to its hard dilemmas, crises and challenges. It is also waiting for your smart questions. Let me put to you this seed: Many great tech-minds in the world expect unimaginable technological advances in the next 30 years or so will lead to machines that are smarter than human beings.

I urge every one of you to start thinking of your participation in the world’s other real movements towards humanity’s future advancements: in engineering, biology, biotechnology, health science, Business, Finance, Architecture, or languages.

But more important is for you to think of your own advancement. What is that incident in your Future History, so to speak, in the next 10 – 20 years or more, you are dreaming of, and are going to push it towards its happening, for your life and the lives of others?

I put this seed-question in your hands as you prepare to move on. Move on in all directions, and keep coming back to your AUM, with your ideas, dreams, work and support. AUM will always await you through its networks and ALUMNI chapters which are awaiting your future care and attention.

We hope and look forward to the day when AUM Alumni will be sitting right here on this stage as Faculty members, senior administrators, and as members of the Board of Trustees. That will not be considered as inbreeding, but will be returning to their home to enrich the institution with their distinguished achievements and to support its growth and sustainability for generations to come.

We are all here celebrating a great moment. And we are all responsible for making this greatness extend for a lifetime…. and beyond.

I conclude by extending to you, dear graduates of 2017, and to your parents and families my sincere and warm congratulations wishing you all a bright future. Remember to set your goals high, aim at your own star, and do not stop until you get there.

May God bless you
