Civil Engineering Department

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a wide spectrum of opportunities for direct entry into the engineering profession, for graduate education in engineering, or entry into various other professions. While maintaining its emphasis on the fundamental understanding of the behavior of constructed facilities through the application of the physical sciences and mathematics, the curriculum has continually evolved in directions that exploit advances in technology. The methods of engineering design are introduced in the freshman year and are emphasized throughout the curriculum in both traditional and open-ended project-oriented courses.

The Civil Engineering Department strives to become recognized as a regional, national, and international leader in engineering education, research and community services by producing top-quality civil engineers and employing principles of constant quality improvement to enhance its program.

The mission of the Civil Engineering Department is to serve the people of Jordan by providing a broad and high-quality education to its students for a successful professional career, to conduct strong basic and applied research for national needs, and to serve the industry, civil engineering profession, and community at large through innovative solutions, dissemination of knowledge, and advancement of civil engineering in major areas of the profession.

The graduates of the Civil Engineering program will:

  1. Engage in professional careers in a broad range of civil engineering areas in public and private sectors in Jordan, or successfully pursue advanced studies and careers in academia or in other research environments.
  2. Advance in responsibility and leadership in their careers and engage in continuous professional development to respond to rapidly evolving technological and social challenges.
  3. Contribute to the welfare of the society and the development of the profession through responsible practice of engineering and involvement in professional organizations.

Department Laboratories

Lab Name Location Description
Environmental Engineering lab   This Lab is intended to prepare students to practice basic water quality analyses. Gravimetric, volumetric and spectrophotometric analytical methods are used to determine quality parameters of raw water, finished water and wastewater. Parameters tested include Alkalinity, Hardness, Salinity and solids, BOD and COD among others.
Construction Material Lab Engineering Labs’ Building Teaching student to test normal consistency and setting time of cement past, fresh and mechanical properties of mortar, sieve analysis of aggregate, specific gravity of aggregate, unit weight of aggregate, abrasion test of aggregate, fresh and mechanical properties of concrete, mechanical properties of steel, tests on wood (Mechanical and Visual), impact test on steel, hardness test on metals.
Structural Engineering Lab   In this lab a set of experiments is performed that covers the introduction to instrumentation and testing techniques. Equilibrium of forces, Equilibrium of parallel forces, Forces in a truss, Bending moment in a beam, Shear force in a beam, Continuous and indeterminate beams, Beam and cantilever deflection, Bending moment influence lines, Bending stress in a beam, Two hinged arch, Deflection of frames, Reinforced concrete beam.
Geotechnical Lab   A set of experiments are performed that cover the following: Soil Description and Identification, Moisture Content, Organic content, Specific gravity, Sieves and Hydrometer Analysis; Atterberg Limits (Liquid, Plastic and Shrinkage Limits); Compaction; Permeability tests (constant and falling head); Consolidation; Swell test; Direct Shear; Unconfined Compression test; Triaxial Compression test.
Highway Lab   A set of experiments is performed to cover properties of highway materials, including aggregates, asphalt binder, and mixtures. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) aggregate gradation, blending procedure, volumetrics, Superpave binder testing and specifications.
Surveying lab SA-G04 A set of experiments is performed that teaches fundamentals of surveying methods as applied to construction layout, use of level and total station for location and control of structures, vertical and horizontal control, and area determination

Civil Engineering Department Activities

  • Offered the first on-line course (Energy and the Environment) in AUM as part of a collaborative exchange between AUM and Gannon University in 2013.
  • Ranked first in the Jordanian Universities Bridge Contest held at University of Jordan in 2014.
  • Ranked first in the Jordanian competency test for Civil Engineering amongst all Jordanian universities in 2016.
  • Faculty members obtained funding for research projects through AUM’s Faculty of Research.
