Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Electrical Engineering at the American University of Madaba. We offer Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering which involves four electrical engineering streams, namely, Computer, Electronics, Communications, and Power and Control. The B.Sc. program is accredited by the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions (HEAC).

Our program is designed to provide quality education, research and community service. The main goals are to prepare future electrical engineers to meet the society’s challenges, produce and disseminate new knowledge, and to develop a strong sense of leadership and community service.

To be internationally recognized, attracting elite research projects and preparing well-rounded, highly qualified engineering graduates that will improve their communities.

Mission

The mission of Electrical Engineering Department is to provide a high-caliber program that prepares engineers who are capable of being leaders in the fields of electrical engineering. Our graduates will serve their country and humanity by advancing the state of knowledge in our disciplines in a global information society that is rapidly evolving.

Objectives

Our graduates:

  1. Will be able to apply creatively their understanding of science and engineering principles to the solution of problems facing them in their prospective careers.
  2. Possess a strong commitment to ethical practice within their work, and are sensitive to environmental, social, safety and economic aspects.
  3. Have a continuing ambition to advance in their education and their professional development activities.
  4. Can effectively communicate their ideas, positions clearly and concisely, both orally, and in writing, individually and as team members in different group sizes and can successfully resolve conflicts.

Department Laboratories

Lab Name Location Description
Electric Circuits Lab Engineering Labs’ Building Students perform experiments that cover:
DC circuits: Kirchhoff’s laws and mesh analysis, Thevenin’s and Norton’s theorems, superposition theorem, Wheatstone bridge, and transient response: RL, RC, and RLC circuits.
AC circuits: Impedance concept, frequency response, three-phase circuits, Y-Δ transformation, maximum power transfer, and two-port networks.
Electronics Lab. (1) Engineering Labs’ Building Experiments in this Lab involve:
Diode and transistor characteristics, voltage rectification, biasing, single and multistage amplifiers, and h-parameters. Computer-aided electronic circuit analysis and design are used.
Digital Logic Design Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building Experiments include:
Building combinational circuits using gates, parallel adder, decoders, multiplexers, ROM, RAM, register, counters. This lab starts with the basic logic components, and continues with an FPGA development kit. A simple design project may be assigned during this lab.
Electronics Lab. (2) Engineering Labs’ Building  This Lab has the following experiments:
MOSFET characteristics and amplifiers, operational amplifier characteristics and use, functional circuits, power supply design. Computer-aided electronic circuit analysis and design are used.
Digital Electronics Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building  A set of experiments is performed that covers the following:
Basic TTL circuits, TTL characteristics, basic MOS logic circuits, MOS characteristics, logic gate based oscillators, interfacing techniques, sampling circuits, and A/D and D/A converters.
Electrical Machines and Power Lab. Workshop’ Building Experiments in this Lab cover the following:
Single-phase transformers and simulation, three-phase transformers, DC machines: motors and generators, synchronous machines: motors and generators, special motors: induction and stepping, simulated three-phase transmission lines, three-phase reactive power compensation, power factor improvement, and protection relays: over-current, overvoltage, under-voltage, and directional.
Control Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building The following are the Lab experiments:
Analog simulation, first and second order systems, transient and steady state for step, ramp, and parabolic inputs, time and frequency response of second order systems, DC motor control, application of PID controllers, phase lead and phase lag controllers, applications of MATLAB control toolbox and Simulink, level control, and PLC control.
Communications Electronics Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building Students perform experiments that include:
Power amplifiers, oscillators, waveform generation, multivibrators: astable and monostable circuits, 555 timers, modulation and demodulation circuits, phase locked loop (PLL) circuits, and active filters.
Microprocessor and Embedded Systems Lab Engineering Labs’ Building Experiments of this Lab deal with:
Software development using PC assembly language, implementation of simple I/O interfacing circuits, keyboard and 7-segment displays scanning, a simple interfacing circuit project, introduction to PIC, MPLAB, and IDE, interfacing switches and LED displays, use of mechanical and
solid state relays, interrupts and counters, A/D conversion, temperature measurement, waveform generation, and PWM techniques.
Analog Communications Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building A set of experiments is performed that include:
RF amplifiers, noise, oscillators, frequency conversion, AM generation and reception, phase-locked loops, angle modulation, and frequency modulations.
Digital Communications Lab. Engineering Labs’ Building This laboratory involves experiments on:
Variety of modulation schemes and encoding formats, such as pulse code modulation (PCM), frequency shift keying (FSK), and phase shift keying (PSK). PCM line codes including RZ, NRZ, and Manchester.

 

Electrical Engineering Department Activities

  • Head a committee for accrediting electrical engineering department, Middle East University, Aug 2015.
  • Conducting a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Course in Robotics and Special Topics in Mechanical Engineering with two other institutions. These institutions are Gannon University (Erie, PA, USA) and University of Baghdad (Baghdad, Iraq).
  • Conducting a research entitled: “Forecasting of Engineering Students’ Achievement using their Biometric Data using Wearable Sensors: An Artificial Neural Networks Study”.
